I wanted to take a moment to thank you, my students, friends, family and colleagues around the world, for making 2017 bearable and hopeful. It was tumultuous year for humanity and for me personally. Professionally, there were many joys and successes, and for that I am grateful!
I’ve had my moments of feeling despair for my country and the world, but I have resolved to remain optimistic, and am looking forward to 2018 with renewed hope and excitement. Even when some humans will be crappy to each other, others will be extraordinarily compassionate and caring. I choose to support the latter with my energy, money and talents. I haven’t been in the classroom for nearly a decade, but I never left the education profession. I will continue to do my part in promoting joy, love and shared humanity through the education of cultural dance and music.
And while I am still on this journey toward the self-caring and self-aware human (and will be for a while), three pieces of advice, while difficult to practice at times, are proving to be invaluable:
- Always show your humanity and recognize the humanity in others, especially when their viewpoints differ from yours.
- Approach conflict with compassion and curiosity.
- Recognize your impact on the world outside of yourself.
Thank you for your friendship, love and support, and the privilege to teach you and to learn from you. May love, light and fabulous shimmies guide you in 2018. Happy New Year!
